How do I transfer utilities?
Move Day Panic? Transfer Utilities Fast with This 7-Step Checklist
You’re moving. Don’t lose power, water, or internet because you forgot the utilities. Follow these steps to transfer utilities fast—no stress, no downtime.
Why this matters
As a top local realtor, I’ve seen moves fail on small things. Utilities are small until they aren’t. Transfer utilities right and your move feels professional. Get it wrong and you start with headaches. This guide shows exactly how to transfer utilities for a smooth move.
Quick checklist (read first)
- Make a list of accounts: electricity, gas, water, internet, cable, garbage, security
- Gather account numbers and ID
- Decide: transfer, cancel, or start new
- Schedule final meter reading and first active date at new home
- Confirm deposits, credits, and payment set-up
Step-by-step: How to transfer utilities
1) Start 2–3 weeks before moving
Contact each utility 2–3 weeks before your move. Tell them your moving date and whether you’re transferring service or closing the account. Ask about required ID, proof of ownership/tenancy, and deposit rules.
2) Know the difference: transfer vs start new
- Transfer: same provider moves service to new address.
- Start new: a different provider activates service at new address. Compare costs and installation timelines.
3) Collect information (do this now)
Have these ready: account number, service address, new address, move-in date, ID, method of payment. For gas/electric, record current meter readings on moving day.
4) Schedule meter readings and final billing
Book a final meter reading on move-out day. Request final bill email. This prevents disputed charges and makes sure you get credits or refunds.
5) Book installation for internet and cable early
Installations can take a week. Book internet/cable 2–3 weeks out. Ask about technician windows and whether self-install is possible.
6) Update address for billing and emergency contact
Use the same date to update your billing address on bank accounts and insurance. Add utilities to your change-of-address checklist so mail and bills follow you.
7) Confirm on move-in day
On move-in, check electricity, gas pilot lights, water, and internet. Keep receipts, confirmation emails, and technician names. If service fails, escalate with account numbers and move-in date.
Common extras to check
- Garbage/recycling schedule and registration
- Municipal water account vs landlord responsibility
- Security systems and smart devices re-activation
